Internet Marketing for the Medical Industry

Long gone are the days when the medical world could just rely on referrals from their colleagues.

Two things have spurred this catalyst: the first being the advent of a digital age in which consumers can have research at their fingertips to help with decisions that they used to leave to the "professionals." The second being the Affordable Care Act, wherein now, the freedom of choice in providers has opened up new levels that have not been seen before.

This creates a whole new world, not only for the patients, but now also for the providers. First, one must consider how truly competitive the medical industry is and understand that anything that can create an edge over the competition should be looked at. In days past, a practice could rely upon basic marketing principles, such as the Yellow Pages, radio, newspapers, and word of mouth. Now, however, the internet is arguably the most important marketing method that you can have. Just having a website is not enough, though. You need to appeal to your potential clients and you must engage them.

SEO, Social Media, and Reputation Management are now the tools that need to be employed to develop a reputation as a provider of choice. What these tools will do for you is make you stand out in the sea of information on the search engines as well as help you to build trust. Having a high ranking in the search engines is important as the typical person will only search so far before making their choice. The social media portion is important in that it helps you to provide valuable information to your patients and potential patients, yet it also allows you to engage them on a more personal level, creating trust. Your competitors are likely already doing things like this and should you decide to ignore it, you are, without a doubt, falling further and further behind.

There are many modalities and complexities when it comes to Internet Marketing, least of which being Google's constant changes and tweaks to its algorithm. What you should realize, though, is the need to develop keywords and terms that specify your specialty and practice and build upon that. Secondly, engaging the public-at-large with info that is relevant to their needs and tying everything back together will position your practice as an authority.

This is accomplished by utilizing keywords and targeting them through correct use on your website and developing backlinks that lead to your site. Additionally, develop appropriate content and utilize social media to increase the exposure that your practice is receiving. This, however, must be done correctly and remain compliant with the terms of service of the search engines. Failure to do so can lead to diminished rankings and even a ban from the search engines. Can you afford that to happen to your practice?

In closing, here at IMAGINE, we have a group of experts ready to assist you in this area. We are committed to your success and the success of your internet marketing efforts. Feel free to contact me directly for more information on how IMAGINE can help develop the strategies that will work for you.

Data Security for your Medical Practice

My Password is Password!
In today’s age of “Cybersecurity”, “Cyber-Attacks”, and “Cyber insert any word here”, many companies find themselves datasecuritypicstruggling to keep up with the cutting edge techniques used to breach safeguards.  Malware, spyware, adware, rootkits, and the list goes on and on.  Your IT staff has been tasked ith the impossible task of staying ahead of the “bad guys” by preventing attacks from every angle.  Countless hours researching techniques and discovering new ways that the hackers might get in.  However, the most dangerous person to your company’s valuable information might just be sitting in front of your computer screen right now!

It is estimated that 75-80% of the 40+ million cyber-attacks in 2014 involved weak passwords, with the average “cyber” incident costing $720,000, most companies just can’t afford a loss of that magnitude.  In the medical industry the costs can grow exponentially with patient privacy at risk.  As we saw with the Target in 2013, just one data breach can throw a $145 million wrench in the cogs.  By ensuring that employees have a strong password, a company can all but eliminate the 75-80% of cyber-attacks that prey on weak passwords and I’ll prove it!

In 2014, the top two passwords were 123456 and password, which would be determined within the first second of a brute force attack.  Below, I’ll give you some sample passwords, and the maximum amount of time that it would take to figure it out with today’s technology.

dog – .000004394 seconds
sparky – Instantly (Top 100 most used passwords)
barks -  Instantly (Top 10,000 most used passwords)

There are three passwords above that are highly logical for a person that has a dog named Sparky who barks.  If you were to put them together while adding a number and special character, the time required to crack the password changes drastically:

Myd0gSp@rkyBarKs – 12 trillion years

At ImagineSoftware, we have a password policy that requires 14 characters with an uppercase, lowercase, special character, and number to be changed every 30 days.

With just a little bit of consideration about your password, YOU can be your company’s most valuable asset in the fight against cyber-attacks.  With the medical industry constantly having to be diligent with HIPPA standards, this is a no-brainer.  So next time you change your password, make sure to remember that you could be the deciding factor on whether your data is breached or remains safe, as well as that of your patients.

As a tip:  Choose a password that is reasonably long and is not made up of simple words.   Do not use things that are obvious such as your name, children or pets names and stay away from easily found dates like birthdays and anniversaries.  Make sure to mix it up and use symbols, punctuation and numbers to help.  Above all else, don't write it down where it can be found, and don't give it out.  YOU are the first and biggest line of defense!

5 Tips for Conference Prospecting

5 Tips for Conference Prospecting

Imagine is currently used to bill over 26 different specialties and as a result, we can be found at over 15 conferences eachImagineSoftware | Trade Shows calendar year. I have had the pleasure of attending mainly Radiology, Pathology, Emergency Medicine and Billing Company centric conferences throughout the years; here are some my tips for making the most out of conference prospecting.

1. Know Yourself. That is to say, know your product and who the decision maker is for your product or service.  If the decision maker is Dr. Provider, focus on conferences that cater and attract the Providers specifically, if it is Administrators you seek you may find yourself elsewhere.  It seems simple, but often an overlooked detail – the audience.

2. Do Your Research.  Once you have found a conference targeted to your audience, do your due diligence and know their business.  Not personally, but professionally – leave the stalking to some other sales representative – have a firm understanding of the challenges they are facing as well as how best to position yourself or your service / product as a resource for them.

3. Make it Personal.  If provided with a pre-show list, make the effort to invite your most desired prospects to your booth.  Get creative or just send them a HAND WRITTEN invitation to you booth.  Yes, I said “hand written.”  In this email and text driven age, the response that I receive from hand written notes and invitations is tremendous.  Do something PRIOR to the conference to stand out and encourage your prospects to visit with you.

4. Stand and SMILE! Again, I know it seems simple, but I cannot tell you the number of times I walk through an exhibit hall only to see two people sitting behind a barricade, a.k.a. their table checking email or some other meaningless task on their phone / computer.  Be present in the moment, make eye contact and smile.  Your next prospect is likely just one warm, encouraging smile or “good morning” away.  You’re allowed to smile and laugh – engage your (target) audience and have fun doing it – that is the most attractive booth element I have ever witnessed.

5. Greet Your Neighbours.
Often times other Exhibitors can be prospects and / or a resource for your company.  Speaking with as many people as possible is the goal for all conferences.  Strike up a conversation and determine if there is any business opportunity.

And finally, on a more personal note: Get the carpet padding.  Exhibit hall hours are not only long and hard on your legs, but remember, your prospects are walking around too!  It may seem silly, but I have even used the padding under our booth carpet as an invitation to seemingly uninterested passers-by to strike up a conversation.

Here’s a list of the conferences that Imagine attended in 2015:  ACEP, RBMA, TRS/TX, New England, CA and Northeast RBMA, HBMA, EDPMA, NCARBM, CA Radiology Society, American College of Radiology, NC Collegof Emergency Physicians, and Essentials of Emergency Medicine.

If you have any questions or would like feedback about any one of these conferences, please do not hesitate to contactCourtneyme directly.   Additionally, if there are any conferences that you have found to be particularly beneficial, I too would be interested in hearing from you.
